Vehicle Tax Check
Check whether any UK vehicle is currently taxed and when the tax is due. Driving an untaxed car without a SORN is against the law.
Run a Tax CheckRoad tax (Vehicle Excise Duty) must be in place for any car used or parked on a public road, unless it has a valid SORN declaring it off the road. Buying a car and driving it away untaxed can land you with a fine and penalty points.
Our vehicle tax check uses official DVLA data to show you the current tax status, when the tax expires, and whether the vehicle is declared SORN — so there are no surprises when you take it home.

Frequently asked questions
Does car tax transfer when I buy a car?
No. Road tax is no longer transferred between owners. When you buy a car you must tax it in your name before driving it, even if the previous owner had tax remaining.
What is a SORN?
A Statutory Off Road Notification tells the DVLA a vehicle is being kept off public roads, so it does not need to be taxed. A SORN car cannot be driven until it is taxed again.
Is the tax check free?
Yes. Tax and SORN status are part of our free DVLA-powered car check.
