Insurance Write-Off Check
Find out if a vehicle has been declared an insurance write-off — and which category — before you buy. Not every write-off is disclosed by sellers.
Run a Write-Off CheckWhen an insurer decides a damaged vehicle is uneconomical or unsafe to repair, it records a write-off category against it. Some categories mean the car can never legally return to the road; others can be repaired and sold on, often without the buyer being told.
Our write-off check reveals any insurance write-off marker recorded against the vehicle, including the category and the date, so you understand exactly what you are looking at and can price and inspect accordingly.

Frequently asked questions
What do the write-off categories mean?
Cat A and Cat B vehicles must be crushed or dismantled and should never be on the road. Cat S (structural) and Cat N (non-structural) vehicles can be legally repaired and re-sold, but the damage history should always be disclosed.
Is it safe to buy a Cat S or Cat N car?
It can be, if it was repaired to a proper standard. Always get an independent inspection and factor the write-off history into the price and future resale value.
Is the write-off check included in the Full HPI Check?
Yes. Insurance write-off and salvage markers are part of every Full HPI Check.
